Community engagement

From office to supply chain, corporate responsibility (CR) is critical to every aspect of RSK’s (and therefore Remedx) operations. We are committed to going beyond statutory obligations and do our utmost to be a good neighbour, to care for our stakeholders and to minimise our impact on the environment.

Our approach is not static and develops in accordance with emergent best practice, internal and external innovation, and relevant legislative drivers.

Governance

RSK’s executive board has ultimate responsibility for implementing CR across the group with local support coming from appointed CR representatives at each RSK office.

Environment

RSK's is committed to minimising the environmental impact of all aspects of its business operations. We acknowledge that climate change is a threat to our profitability as well as the future of the planet and conduct our business accordingly.

Credibility in this area is crucial. As the one of the UK’s leading environmental consultancies, we need to prove beyond doubt that we ‘walk the talk’.

A good indicator of our environmental performance at project level came in November 2007 when the Achilles Verify scheme gave RSK an 82.5% rating for its environmental management system and 81.4% for its on-site performance.

ISO 14001

Since 2003, all RSK business operations have had to conform to the rigorous environmental criteria defined by the ISO 14001 management system. This demands that

  • All potential and actual environmental aspects pertaining to our premises and projects are identified

  • The resulting impacts (direct and indirect) are assessed and, where appropriate, suitable control measures implemented.

Office directors and the general workforce are responsible for

  • Promoting and implementing efficient energy use

  • Promoting the recycling of materials, where practical and cost effective

  • Minimising business-related travel and promoting the use of public transport and shared travel/commuting, where practical and cost effective.

Energy

In 2005, RSK made a group-wide pledge to reduce energy use by 10% across all offices.

To help achieve this goal, RSK has become an affiliate member of Good Energy, the UK's only energy supplier offering electricity from 100% renewable sources. Currently, 11 UK offices, all those we have absolute control over bill payment, receive electricity from this source, while other offices are set to follow suit subject to permission from our various landlords (several of our offices are on shared leases).

The logistics of ensuring the 10% reduction target is coherently perused across the Group has been a considerable challenge, but our data gathering is becoming increasingly honed and we are optimistic that progress can be rapidly accelerated.

Green Travel

RSK is committed to encouraging sustainable travel wherever possible through initiatives such as

  • Discouraging travel to meetings by car and opting instead for public transport or tele/video conferencing

  • Promoting a cycle-to-work scheme, which gives employees the opportunity to hire or buy bicycles and safety equipment as a tax-free benefit

  • Recording all hire-car, long-lease and company-fleet-vehicle mileages with a view of reducing emissions in this field

  • Investigating the possibility of using ‘second generation’ biofuels that are provably sustainable in all project-related vehicles

  • Setting up a car sharing scheme at all offices.

Recycling

In line with ISO 14001, there is a company-wide procedure for recycling office and project waste streams. For personal waste (i.e. lunch), employees are encouraged to be as environmentally friendly as possible.

Green Procurement

RSK is committed to sustainable procurement and ensures that environmentally friendly and ethically sound products are available at each of its offices.

Sponsorships/support

We have a strong record of supporting projects and initiatives related to carbon emission reduction:

  • We are the main business sponsor for Ashton Hayes Going Carbon Neutral, a groundbreaking project where the titular village is attempting to become the first in the UK to achieve carbon neutrality. In addition to providing substantial funding and technical resources to the project, two senior RSK directors, one of whom conceived the project, sit on the volunteer group that drives the project. Since it launched it has garnered worldwide press attention, featured in a Graham Norton hosted segment during Live Earth and inspired communities around the world to lead more sustainable lives.

  • We are the main business sponsor for Chester City Council’s pioneering CRed scheme, which made Chester the first city in the world to offer all citizens personalised guidelines for carbon emission reduction

  • We were instrumental in establishing the Crichton Carbon Centre. A pioneering venture, it is Scotland’s first dedicated sustainable energy and carbon emissions research centre and launched the UK’s first MSc in carbon management. It was also the first in the UK to offer in-depth business courses related to climate change, for which up to six RSK staff provide lecturing duties once a month.

RSK has sponsored the appointment of Roy Alexander as Professor of Environmental Sustainability at the University of Chester and the Romanian village of Şinca Nouă’s bid to become an eco-village.

Ethics

RSK is committed to conducting business in a manner that is consistent with fundamental ethical, professional and legal standards and principles. We operate a zero tolerance policy toward those that contravene these.

Staff

The success of the company is entirely down to the talent of the workforce, so a considerable emphasis is placed on personal growth, encouragement and earned rewards. At our last Investors In People audit, the assessors reported that RSK’s work culture “in many respects far exceeds the requirements of the standard”; that the company was seen to “constantly fine-tune to improve performance”; that there “have been significant developments in the way that people are managed and developed”; and that there was a “feeling that, if initiative is shown, anyone can take an idea forward.”

Inclusion and diversity

RSK is an equal opportunities employer and does not discriminate on the grounds of gender, sexual orientation, marital status, race, age, ethnicity, religion or disability. Every employee has equal opportunities for promotion, training and professional advancement. Any form of harassment, bullying or intimidation is dealt with immediately and proportionately.

Health and safety

RSK is certified to OHSAS 18001 and monitors its performance through an integrated safety, health and quality environmental management system (SHEQMS). An in-house management team arranges regular audits and training to ensure the system is always up to date.

Community outreach and charity

RSK seeks to support the communities in which it operates through charitable donations and environmental education, where appropriate. Our community engagement and donation policy primarily focuses on climate change, supporting schools and poverty alleviation drives, typically within our local communities. A total of 31 official charity donations totalling £23,223 were made in the period 21 April 2007 to 28 February 2008. In addition, there are countless individual efforts and smaller initiatives cropping up on a monthly basis across RSK’s many offices.

Communication

RSK recognises it cannot adopt an insular approach to CR and encourages input from our workforce, stakeholders, customers and investors on how we can evolve and improve our performance. Robust in-house communication with staff ensures consistency of approach to achieving common targets and that pertinent CR issues permeate everyday business decisions as a matter of course.

Review

This policy is reviewed by the executive board when circumstances dictate and, as a minimum, on an annual basis.
